It is always necessary to pay attention to the Truth - especially when such important issues - like a heavenly message - are at stake. Thank you, too, for your comment!

The biography of St. Jean Marie Vianney states that he initially promoted devotion to LaSalette but stopped doing so after meeting with Maxime. He later regained belief.

“The Cure D’Ars,” by Abbe Francis Trochu (Baronius Press). I just read Chapter 19 on La Salette, and I had forgotten the last part. For 8 years after having met Maxime, it appears that the Cure doubted, but that he regained belief after prayer and struggle some 10 months before he died.

This more in depth article better summarises the details of La Salette and reminds Catholics that they are forbidden to spread the unapproved messages.

Indeed, this is truly a detailed article. Related to France, one important thing that is not mentioned is the fact that the origins of the "sexual revolution" are also French. I discussed with people who were convinced that they were Americans - but, not, they were French. A specific issue with many "traditionalist" Catholic is their desire to see their interpretation of the current status of affairs in the Church explicitly confirmed by Heaven through such private revelations. Due to this, they tend to alter such secrets in order to get this confirmation. It is an abuse that must be firmly rejected. The debatable implicit premise of the mentioned article is the possibility of the Pope, Bishops and Cardinals to apostatize ("prophecies that were either in tension with the Catholic faith, as in its assertion that Rome would apostatize"): I do not think that our Catholic faith affirms that a hierarch (the Pope included) cannot apostatize or - at least - become a heretic. Of course, I admit that it is a difficult and very troubling issue. But can we say nowadays that Rome's faith is the Traditional Catholic, orthodox faith? Even if someone very well-meaning wants to believe this, Rome's way to confess the perennial Catholic faith - without ambiguity and accompanied by clear, public, explicit condemnation of the great errors of our times and of those who spread them - is missing.

I think most Catholics who cite that specific quote are repeating it out of ignorance. Articles like the one linked and yours are helpful in addressing their ignorance and discouraging them from repeating such quotes.
